ABOUT

S.D. Studios Art Rocks Camp is a specialized art based program designed exclusively for children ages 5 – 10. It is located in a state licensed Oak Park home and it is run by Sandra Dawson a mother of three, certified art teacher, prior licensed day care provider of 17 years, and professional artist. Although this program is art based, the most important aspect is that the children are happy, comfortable and feel fully accepted. Children from all diverse backgrounds are welcome and cultural uniqueness is cherished. The program is based on a holistic approach, the whole child and the child’s internal desire to learn and grow. Therefore, exploration, independence, problem solving and social interaction are promoted and celebrated. Adult guidance, care, nurturing and conversation are equally important and are cultivated in a safe home environment.

The process and exploration of art making is more important then the product and children are encouraged to follow their interests and to think outside of the box. Planned art projects and a theme are presented but children are encouraged to initiate activities and projects as well. Self-confidence is gained through problem solving and developing conceptual ideas. The kids at S.D. Studios are given freedom to experiment and explore their individuality through the art making process.

Sandra Dawson previously taught art in the Chicago area for 10 years. Her extensive background includes working at several Chicago Public Schools with pre K–High school level kids; teaching at a gifted school, a school for children with special needs, an independent school, and two non-profit organizations: Marwen and A.R.T.

Eventually, she created her own program traveling through the Chicago Public Schools as an art teacher in residence. When she moved to Oak Park in 1997 she became licensed as a day care provider and designed an art based after school program and summer camp while teaching and painting from her home.
